January Blog -- 6 hrs.
In January, I continued my involvement with the Miracle League. This month we played a new sport: Kickball. I am now a proud member of team Seals! Go Seals!
For the first few weeks, I was given one kid who channeled all of his energy into running around the perimeter of the kickball field. Another week, a kid did not have a buddy, so I doubled-up. Aside from cars and sports, their main interest was mimicking me, which was funny for the first five minutes. (It was actually funny the entire time, I just couldn't let them know that.) Their focus grew sharp once their turns came to kick the ball or run the bases. No amount of yelling "Stop at second base!" could prevent these two from reaching home plate every time. We scored a total of four points for the team!
What I liked about this month's sport was the effort of the volunteers to make sure the kids had fun and felt included. Children in wheelchairs received physical assistance to help them kick the ball. They were each given the chance to throw the ball to the pitcher, even if they could not bend down and pick the ball up.
I enjoy seeing the moments when people go the extra mile to help another person achieve fulfillment.
