December Blog: Second Harvest Food Bank - 4 hrs.
For the rest of my volunteer hours, I went back to Second Harvest to package food. We spent the day putting spinach, bread pudding, and jambalaya into containers to be distributed. They played great music from artists like Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, and others while we package the food. Some volunteers were singing along. I inevitably joined them. It was a great way to pass the time and keep our mind busy while our hands focused on packaging food. We also socialized in the midst of our packaging. I loved talking with the people and making connections. Coincidentally, a lot of the volunteers and I shared mutual friends, which is always exciting to discover.
I believe we successfully boxed over 400 meals. 400! Its both humbling and amazing to me that one day of service can make such an impact on the community. The workers are always so happy to have volunteers as reflected by their warm greetings and disposition. Knowing the impact that this service has on families, walking out of Second Harvest after hours of packaging is rewarding. I hope the families are enjoying their meals!
